need to keep in mind the special requirements of the web
Whether you're an accomplished print designer or are just getting started, you'll need to approach each web page design job keeping the special requirements of the web in mind. This section is meant to make you aware of some of the issues. It will take a while to learn many of these requirements, so you'll start with your current understanding, and add new tricks as you go along.
Issues Designing Pages for the Web
Over the last few years I've seen commercially available web page templates created by talented print designers. Oftentimes they are visually stunning. However, once you start working with them you discover they were not created with the web in mind. They sometimes contains hundreds of images in a complex tangle of tables within tables. These templates are difficult to work with - they "break" easily if you place the wrong type or amount of content into the site. And, they often take a long time to load because they often have way too many images, or images not optimized properly for the web.
Below, you can read about some of the issues. This site will include an ever widening collection of tips and tutorials on how to create web optimized elements.Tricks for Designing Web Pages
Here is a partial list of items a designer needs to be aware of when creating a web page design;
- Amount of and type of graphics versus download speed
- Reusing of graphics throughout a site to take advantage of browser caching and thus limit download time
- Properly optimizing graphics for the web
- Common elements that appear appear on websites that you need to plan for
- Creating graphics-light expanding elements
- Intelligent use of backgrounds
- Integrating navigation into your design
- Cross browser issues
The more a designer for the web has a technical understanding of a how a web page works, the better he/she can create a design that can be easily and successfully converted into a website.
